  • Wall Thickness

    Wall thickness is one of the most important factors when designing plastic injection molding parts as it affects mechanical performance, cosmetics, and cost.

    The pressure the part will have to endure for its estimated lifetime is the first factor to consider when it comes to determining minimum wall thickness.

  • Uniformity of Wall Thickness

    Uniformity of wall thickness is just as important as wall thickness itself because it is the root of critical distortions in the final molded product.

    Unbalanced wall thicknesses can cause undesirable results, such as air traps and weld lines because the molten resin naturally flows more toward thicker walls, resulting in uneven distribution of polymer within the mold.

  • Draft Allowance

    Draft is angle intentionally given to product design for easier part removal from mold. Lack of draft may result in cosmetics flaw and/or even critical damange. Depending on complexity of texture on the surface that is in direct contact with mold, 1-5 degrees of draft can be applied.

  • Bosses

    A boss is a raised area designed for fastening and connecting separate parts. Well placed bosses can efficiently fortify structural integrity of the molded part while maintaining the wall thickness to minimum. Ensuring bosses are designed and placed cafeully is very important because unnecessarily complicating the mold design can cause uneven flow and voids.

  • Fillets and Radii

    Fillets and radii are rounded transitions where two walls meet to reduce stress concentrations in the adjoining area.

    Sharp corners often cause part failure, stress concentrations, poor mold flow, and excess mold wear. Fillets and radii are rounded transitions where two walls meet that reduce stress concentrations in the adjoining area.

  • Ribs and Gussets

    Ribs and gussets are used to increase the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of a part. And it's a design element that is not bound by the rule of uniform wall thickness. Generally, ribs have 50% - 80% wall thickness of the nominal wall thickness, as well as fillet on the bottom and controlled height.
